Here are helpful TIPS for staying warm and avoiding dry/skin irritation during winter:
1. Bundle up – make sure to always wear winter jackets, toques, cloves and winter underwear when heading outside.
2. Always check the weather - knowing how the temperature outside can help you a lot on deciding your activity for the day and how much clothes to wear.
3. Always apply petroleum jelly (lick balm) to protect your lips from getting dry.
4. After every shower, apply lotion to whole body to avoid skin dryness and irritation (the air is already dry, hot water and warm air coming from heater/furnace makes it ever dryer).
5. Make sure to dry hair before going outside - going outside while your hair is wet is a big no no because you can get sick and causes headaches.
6. Warm up your car before using it. It is very necessary to warm up your car for your own sake and the car you are using. Allow the maximum of 5 minutes for your car to run before using it.
7. Use common sense – you cannot beat mother nature, when your body cannot handle cold weather anymore, go somewhere warm (remember Calgary weather tends to get extremely cold)
Tips for Winter Driving in the City of Calgary:
1. Renting a car, make sure that the vehicle you are renting is capable of handling extreme cold weather, ask your rental company for the right vehicle to handle Calgary's winter weather.
2. Winter tires are a must - specially during cold Calgary weather where roads get slippery and very dangerous.
3. Driving a 4 wheel or 2 wheel drive - well I’ll go with 4 wheel drive, however, its all about how you drive.
4. Make sure that the vehicle you are using can be plug in order for the engine to stay warm and starts immediately – this is really important especially during extreme cold temperatures.
5. Use a gas line anti-freeze – can be very helpful during extremely cold weather to get your car running right away. Gas line anti freeze can be purchase at any gas station or parts store in Calgary
6. Slow down – although the City of Calgary has the finest snow removal equipments, you still have to slow down for your own safety.
7. Carry a cell phone in case of a accident, however, don't use them while driving.
8. Use good judgment (if your gut tells you not to drive, then better listen to it)
There you go! I hope that these winter tips can be useful for you when you visit Calgary during the winter.
