Travel Tips and Advice

Very useful Travel Tips and Advice! In order to make you visit here in Calgary hassle free, fun and exciting, here are useful travel tips and advice we can offer to you. If you have tips to share, I would love to hear from you!

Language

Canada has two official language English and French. In Calgary, most people speak English making communication on a daily basis very easy. If your English is weak (like mine lol), may I suggest bringing a dictionary or if you have smart phone downloading a language translator application can help you a lot.

Electricity

110 Volts - If you are planning to bring small appliances like your phone charger, laptops, hair dryer, razors etc. It is very important to know that we use 110 Volts electrical system at 60 Hertz here in Canada. To add to this, Flat blade plug and Flat blade with round grounding prong plug are most common wall outlets to plug your device. If your electrical appliances plug has a different shape, you may need to bring plug adapter as well.

Currency

Canada uses Canadian Dollar ($CAD) as its official currency. Fun facts: In Canada, One Canadian ($1.00) dollar is widely known as “The Loonie” while Two Canadian dollars is widely known as “The Toonie”.

Restaurants

Tipping - In Calgary, tipping is customary. A tip is usually from 10% to 15% of your entire bill. Tipping is not mandatory, however, if you dine in with more than 8 people or more expect it to be included in you bill. Reservation – It is not mandatory to book reservation to any of Calgary restaurants, however, certain upscale restaurants might require you to do so. If there’s a special holiday such as Valentine’s Day or Thanks Giving – booking a reservation is not a bad idea.

Tax

Purchased Goods and Services – you only pay %5 GST additional on goods and service you purchased here in the province of Alberta. Other provinces, on top of the GST you have to pay HST or PST.

Business Hours and Banks

Bank Hours – Most banks are open between 9am and 4pm (1600h) Mondays to Fridays. However, they tend to extend their hours on Thursdays and Fridays until 6 pm depending on the bank and their branches. Toronto Dominion Banks (TD) usually opens until 8 pm (Monday to Friday). During Saturdays most banks open at 10 am to 3:30 pm. On Sundays most banks are close except Toronto Dominion(TD) Bank which is now open from 12 pm to 4 pm for their 300 locations.

Government Offices – Most government offices and services are open from 8 am to 4 pm from Monday to Friday. They are often close during the weekends and statutory holidays.

Shops & Malls – Most of the shops and malls in Calgary are open from 9am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 6 pm on Sundays.

Driving

Appropriate Driving Document - If you are planning to drive here in Canada, you must have a valid International Drivers Permit

Road - which is the correct side? - In Canada, you must use the right-side of the road when driving.

Speed Limit - Calgary’s standard speed limit under the Traffic Safety Act is 50 km/h, unless otherwise posted.

Vehicles - Majority of Canadian vehicles are left-side drive.

Photo Radar – Be very careful when you a speeding here in Calgary, speeding cameras and police photo radars are all over especially on major highways and roads.

Seatbelts - Are mandatory and must be worn all time to avoid penalties

Winter

Winter Clothing - Wearing proper clothing during winter here in Calgary is a must. Proper winter attire consist of the following, a winter jacket, gloves, a tuque, winter socks, a scarf, winter underwear, and a sweater. Don’t forget to bring a petroleum jelly to apply to your lips. If you are planning to hit the slopes, winter pants are a must. This fantastic piece of travel tips and advice will help you to enjoy your visit here in Calgary.

Winter Driving - you drive slower during the winter times for safety reasons. Having winter tires on your vehicles can increase safety to your travels.

Credit Cards

Visa and Master Card - Are the preferred and the most common credit cards use by most retail stores, shops and restaurants here in Calgary.

Temperature

Celsius - In Canada the temperature is measured by Celsius (1 Celsius = 33.8 Fahrenheit).

Using Your Cellphone

Cellphone - Do you plan to use your cell phone in Calgary? Be sure to ask your carrier if your cell phone is quad band and if it will accept and send calls/texts internationally. If so, only use for emergency purpose only not for regular calls (roaming cost can be very expensive, watch out!). Using a phone card is a smart thing to do. They are available at most convenient stores, malls, and news-stands. Purchase price from 5, 10, 20 Canadian dollars’ worth of phone cards and enjoy your conversation cost-effectively.

Time

Mountain Time - is the time zone in Calgary, Alberta
(MTS) Mountain Time Standard. UTC/(GMT) -7 hours
(MDS) Summer with Daylight Saving Time UTC/(GMT) -6 hours

Gas

Liters - Gas/petrol is measured in liters (1 gallon = about 3.7 liters).

Postage

Postage - Can be purchased at numerous Canada Post locations and convenient stores.
