Sporting Events in Calgary
Another fantastic thing you can to do while visiting Calgary is to watch our world class sporting events.
As some of you might know, hockey is the most popular sport in Canada and in Calgary. Calgareans love their Calgary Flames through thick or thin. Nevertheless, other sporting events such as Baseball, Equestrian and Football (American) are also very big here in Calgary.
The Calgary Flames Hockey
The game of hockey originated and is one of the most popular sports in Canada. From small town communities all the way to great big cities such as Calgary, hockey dominates the sporting scene. Canadians are very passionate about the game of hockey. Hockey heroes such as Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Toe Blake, Mario Lemieux, Johnny Bauer, Boom Boom Geoffrion, Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Maurice “The Rocket” Richard and many more have raised the level of the hockey game from its humble beginnings. Many people idolize these individuals and some consider them as “hockey gods”.
What is hockey? Hockey is a fast-face and physical game played on ice. The aim of the game is to score goals on opposing net using a hockey stick. Players wear skates and protective equipments while playing. There are six positions to play the game: a goalie, three forwards and two defencemen. The goalie’s job is stopping the opposing team from scoring goals. The three forwards aims are to score goals (defencemen can help as well). While the two defencemen main responsibility is to help the goalie defend against the opposition (forwards as well).
In Calgary, The Calgary Flames is the only professional team that plays in the National Hockey League (NHL). The team was originally from Atlanta and brought to Calgary in the early 80’s. The Flames plays at Scotia Bank Saddledome in downtown Calgary.
The Flames Hockey team is one of the elite teams in the league. The team won the Stanley Cup in 1989 and looking to win it again. They almost won the cup in 2004 but came up short. The amazing play-off run inspired Calgarians all over the nation, highlighted by fans celebration at the Red Mile.
The games are exciting to watch, especially when viewing it live! I’ve been to few games and all were amazing, fun and nerve wracking. It’s one of those experiences that you need to encounter whenever you are here in Calgary.

The Calgary Stampeders
Is another sporting events that is very popular here in Calgary. Just like the NFL (National Football League) in the US, Canada has its own version of it – the CFL (Canadian Football League). The Calgary Stampeders is the team representing Calgary in this league. The team plays at Mac Mahon Stadium – the main venue for the 1988 Winter Olympic. The CFL is a fast and hard hitting game. Rules are slightly different from its US counterpart to make it ever more exciting and fun to watch. In the CFL, you only have 3 downs to advance the ball compare to 4 in the NFL. There is no fair catch in the CFL. A player only has a 5-yard halo given to return a punt and after that he can be hit. The size of the ball is another difference. These are just some of the difference between CFL and the NFL.
There are NFL stars that played CFL first before they made it in the NFL. Names like Warren Moon, Jeff Garcia, Doug Flutie, Joe Theisman, Rocket Ismail, Mervyn Fernandez and Harold Hasselbach are just some of the most popular.
The Calgary Stampede is one of the elite team in the CFL. The team is always on the hunt for a Gray Cup championship every year. Their most recent Gray Cup championship was on Nov 2008 against Montreal. Every Stampeders game is one to remember especially when the Saskatchewan or Edmonton comes to play. Fans are really onto each other, showing their full support for their teams.
