The Canadian Rocky Mountains are vast land filled with awe inspiring scenery, diverse wildlife and home for tons of great recreational activities available for all ages. The Canadian Rockies deliver fun, adventure and excitement like no other. What are the ways to experience all of these? (you may ask). It’s by visiting one of the numerous world-class ski resorts uniquely located near Calgary.

Every year especially during the ski season, thousands of ski enthusiast and tourist visit these resorts because of abundant great terrain available to enjoy both for beginners and more experienced skier and snowboarder. In addition to this, these resorts offer fantastic scenery, services and amenities to make sure your visit is a memorable one.

The Canmore Nordic Centre

The Canmore Nordic Center was one of the venue for the 1988 Winter Olympic Games that was held in Calgary. It is approximately 45 minutes away west of Calgary via highway # 1 (Trans Canada). It is known for having the best cross-country and biathlon trail system with over 70 km of world class trail. In fact, Canmore Nordic Center recently hosted the World Cup in 2005 & 2008. Other notable Cross Country Skiing events were the 1997 World Junior and both the Canadian Junior and Senior Nationals 2002.

Mt. Norquay Banf, Alberta

Mt. Norquay is a local favorite. It is just minutes away from the town of Banff and about 1 ½ hrs west of Calgary (using highway #1 Trans Canada). Mt. Norquay offers terrain ranges from beginner runs all the way to double black diamond runs for more experienced skiers and snowboarders. Spectacular views of surrounding mountains will greet you once you hit the slopes. Mt. Norquay Ski is relatively small compare to some of its neighboring resorts that’s why is its ideal for family ski adventures.

Sunshine Village Ski Resort

If you love skiing or snowboarding then Sunshine Village is for you. Sunshine Village Resort is just few minutes away (8 km/5 miles west of Banff ) off highway # 1 and 1 ½ hrs from west Calgary. Sunshine together with Lake Louise are very popular with the ski & snowboarding communities. Sunshine Village offers 12 different lifts including 8 super lifts, a high speed gondola and 3 different mountains to challenge and polish you skills. What about the beginners? There are numerous wide open runs available ideal for beginners ( Green Run, Creek Run, Meadow, and Larch). Plus Sunshine Village average 30 ft of snow annually making their snow season one of the longest.

Lake Louise Ski Resort

It’s the Lamborghini of Ski Resorts! It is considered one of the best ski destination in the whole world. Lake Louise is about 45 minutes away west of Banff and about 2 ½ hrs from Calgary. Lake Louise offers 4200 acres of skiable terrains. It’s known for legendary scenery and beautiful terrains. The place is a regular host for world-class alpine skiing events and major championships. For beginners and intermediate skiers/snowboarders, Lake Louise offers gentle slopes and long cruising runs. For more experienced/experts you can explore endless chutes, glades, gullies and remote bowls in some of most challenging terrain in the Rockies. Because of its proximity, this is another pros of going to Lake Louise without waiting in line for a long time to experience one of Canada’s best kept secrets.
