Elbow Falls
If you like picnics and hiking at the same time then Elbow Falls is the place to be.
The small water falls is located about 30 to 40 minutes west of Calgary using Highway 22X to Highway 66. This place is very popular because it’s close proximity to Calgary.
Aside from hiking and picnics, there’s nearby spots where you can go fishing (at Forgetmenot Pond) and camping. Oh yah, the view is very nice as well.
Picnics - the water falls is open all year round. During the summer, the place has a tendency to fill up really fast so plan to come really early to get parking. There are numerous picnic tables and fire pits scattered along the falls.
Hiking - If you are up to it, there are several easy to moderate hikes can be found near the falls. One of them is Prairie Mountain Trail Head. It is just located across the road from the falls. It will take about 2 – 2 ½ hours to reach the summit of Prairie Mountains depending on your phase.
Another short easy 1.25 hour hike is Powder Face Ridge. Expect stunning sceneries of the surroundings while hiking these trails.
There is no fee to visit Elbow; you can visit the falls as many as you want as often as you like. Please make sure to clean up after, so that we can maintain this wonderful place. If you want to go fishing make sure that you have a licence because rangers patrol the area often.
