Calgary Weather All You Need to Know

Winter

Winter Season in Calgary normally starts from middle to late November all the way to late March. Calgary's winter is long and dry. Freezing temperature from minus 10° to minus 25° is common. Winter peaks during the months of January and February.

Because of its location near the mountains and to the Pacific Ocean, the City of Calgary experiences chinook winds. What is a chinook? Chinook is warm wind blows in the city from the Pacific Ocean during the winter months. Chinook winds can raise the winter temperature higher usually from 10° and up. The warm temperature can last from a few hours or for days. It’s like having a short summer in the middle of winter. Having chinook is good break from cold weather, you can enjoy winter and not always freezing your butt doing so. It shows the uniqueness of Calgary weather.

Winter activities in Calgary: skiing, snowboarding @ COP, outdoor hockey, tobogganing, watching ice sculpture events, ice fishing, curling, ice skating, watching Calgary Flames hockey and Calgary Hitman games, and visiting the mountains (Banff, Lake Louise and Canmore).

Spring

Spring Season in Calgary starts from late March to May. The temperature goes above zero from plus 2° to plus 5° or even higher. There are great tendencies of snow and cold temperature because of Calgary's location near the Rocky Mountain. Spring is Calgary is very wet and sometimes cold. The month of May ignites the high precipitation in Calgary.

TIPS: If you are driving, make sure your windshield wiper fluids are filled up especially from April - middle of May .

Summer

Summer Season in Calgary starts from early June to late August. Calgary's summer tends to be short and dry. Temperature goes up from plus 20° to 30° or even higher.

During the month of June, Calgary receives its annual rainfall. Thunder showers and hails show up from time to time as well. Summer peaks on the months of July and August where it tends to get really warm.

The city is among the sunniest in Canada, with over 2,000 hours of annual sunshine, on average. On a typical Calgary summer time, the sun starts shinning from 6 am until 9 pm and sometimes until 11 pm.

Fall/Autumn

Autumn Season (Fall) in Calgary starts from September to middle of November. The air gets cooler mostly during early to later parts of evening. The temperature stays around plus 5° to 10° or higher. The days get shorter while evenings start to get darker early usually starting from 4 pm. The scenery in Calgary is like what you see in postcards, very beautiful.

Autumn Activities in Calgary: Harvest at the Heritage Park, Scream Fest at Calgary Olympic Park, late bbq @ the Bowness Park, Zoo Lights begins at the Calgary Zoo and head to the mountains for jaw-dropping views.
